Mystery Object

Sunday, September 27th, 2009

Todays mystery object is the dangly bit which attaches a bicycle derailleur to the frame. This particular example was bent in the work bike shed nearly a year ago and proved extremely differcult to replace (been off a second hand French bicycle).

What I’ve learnt:

- They’re called ‘hangers’.
Like an electrical fuse they’re designed to break first in a collision to prevent damage to the frame. However, every manufacture seems to use many different variations, making them differcult to identify and replace.

- An after market has sprung up
After market supplies have moved in to supply replacements; manufactured in small runs.

St John Street Cycles were able to confirm that my example is actually a ‘Number 6‘ and had one in stock.

The Pairs Head

Wednesday, October 10th, 2007

The long suffering Twickenham punishment double were back in action this weekend, joing 350 other crews in the Pair’s Head; a 4 mile race from Barnes to Hammersmith Bridge. It was quite a solid row; we weren’t last in our division.

This outing also provided an excellent excuse to improve the commute by rowing (half way) to work on Thursday.
It took about an hour to paddle down from Twickenham to Barnes. It would probably have been quicker if we hadn’t perfectly timed the incoming tide to ensure that it was uphill the entire way.

A Cheeky Half

Sunday, September 24th, 2006

Marathon that is.

I was a late minute drafting into this weekend’s Windsor Half Marathon, ahead of next month’s office excursion to Cardiff.

Crap time.

My entry for the Box Hill Ball Buster has also been accepted, so there’s going to need to be some more training this month.

Stewards Enquiry

Friday, July 7th, 2006

The results for the Chase 5k run are in. Normally I won’t even consider getting out of bed for less than 8 miles but this event has always been something of an office grudge match.

The Stewards Enquiry concluded that winning margin was a mere 8 seconds.

25.55 – 1.22 = 24.33
24.51 – 0.10 = 24.41

Punishment Double

Sunday, June 25th, 2006

Putting the novice back into novice sculling…

The first public outing for the Twickenham Turner/McCrae Punishment Double was Richmond Regatta this morning. We were suitably dispatched by the eventual winners of Senior 2. One of the most painful experiences I’ve ever had in a boat.

Memo to self; do something about the gearing on those blades.

Someone is going to get hurt…

Friday, June 2nd, 2006

Twickenham erg test results are in. 6m 42.8s.

You can cover most of the cheap seats in the mens squad with a handkerchief. Someone is going to get seriously hurt if this keeps up.
